# Set an incident's scope and ownership

Set status, severity, service, regions, and the owning team from the incident workspace.

## Before you start

### Intended audience

Incident commanders and responders who maintain incident context.

### Required permissions

You need permission to update the incident.


### Prerequisites

- Open the incident that needs a scope or ownership update.

## Procedure

### Set operational scope

1. **Change the status.** Select the current status. Choose an action from the incident-action menu.

2. **Set the severity.** Select the severity control. If Auto from index is active, review the calculated severity before changing it.

3. **Set the service.** Select Set service or Edit service. Use Select or enter a service… to choose a managed or previously referenced service.

4. **Set the regions.** Select Set regions or Edit regions. Choose each listed region. For a verified unlisted region, use Custom region, enter the exact name, select Add, and then select Apply.

5. **Open ownership settings.** Select Details. Open Classification & ownership.

6. **Set the owning team.** Select Edit Owning team. Choose the accountable team.

Edit the owning team under Details and Classification & ownership. This safe example leaves the value unchanged.

## You are done when…

The incident header shows the current scope. Details shows the accountable team.

## Troubleshooting

<a id="troubleshooting-the-service-or-region-is-not-in-the-catalog"></a>

### The service or region is not in the catalog.

For a verified service, enter its exact name in Select or enter a service…. For a verified region, use Custom region, Add, and Apply. If you cannot verify the value, do not invent scope. Ask a workspace manager to add or verify the service or region.

### The status options do not match the guide.

Tellagen uses the workspace's configured workflow stages. Choose the stage label shown in your workspace rather than assuming a fixed list.

### The service or team is missing.

Ask a workspace manager to add it in Settings before you update the incident.

<a id="troubleshooting-the-severity-shows-auto-from-index"></a>

### The severity shows Auto from index.

Review the automatic inputs. Change the severity only when incident evidence supports a different value.
